Apostrophe and Less than Half are proud to present “City of Women: A Showcase of Female Artists in New York” at the NYC Culture Club. The show is curated by Shannon Bender, co-founder of New York based art startup, Apostrophe, and Hall W. Rockefeller, art critic and founder of Less Than Half, an online community dedicated to holistically solving the problem of women artists’ underrepresentation in the art world.
The show features local artists Giulia Peyrone, Buket Savci, Azzah Sultan, Alayna Coverly, Kamoy Smalling, Paola Martinez Fiterre, and Mokshini, who collectively embody the diverse spirit of the cultural hub and melting pot that is New York. Almost all are first or second generation Americans, representing nine countries across four continents; Italy, Thailand, Turkey, Malaysia, Jamaica, Cuba, India, New Zealand, and the U.S.
Through their work they explore their identities as members of diverse communities, and their pieces touch on a wide range of themes related to their experiences as women. From reflecting on their cultural heritage and nostalgia for home, to overcoming mental health challenges or finding community in the aftermath of shared trauma such as violence against women, all works in the show are a reminder of the resilience, strength and creativity of women.
The exhibition opens on Wednesday, March 8th, from 6-8pm at the NYC Culture Club within the Oculus (C1 South Balcony) at the World Trade Center, and will be on view through April 9th, Wednesday - Sunday from 12-7pm. The opening reception falls on International Women's Day, making it a powerful celebration of women's achievements and a call to action for gender equality in the art world.
